Our History

  • In order to preserve the original Theravada teaching of the Buddha, the institution of the Sri Kalyani monastery was first established by the royal pandith Kadawedduwe jinawansha thero and the royal pandith Matara Sri Gnanarama Thero.
  • The spiritual activities were launched then including meditation programs and Theravada dharma Session in remote villages in Sri lanka by venerable Eddunkelewatte Dhammarama Thero and Venerable Bataduwe Santhamanasa Thero (the residence monk of Weduwa monastery) with the blessings and guidance of the most venerable Badalkumbure anuruddha thero, the chief incumbent of Weduwa monastery
  • Having understood the urgency of giving the true knowledge of Original teaching of the Buddha and developing the quality of morality, concentration and wisdom within our devotees , SADAHAM CHARIKA DHAMMA SOCIETY was established in 2004.01.01
  • In order to provide maximum service to our devotees across the country, the above society purchased a Mazda truck in 2004.07.10 and offered to the monks (Maha Sanga) on Esala Full moon day.
  • The monks traveled on the truck across the country and meditation programs and dhamma discussion were held in many Schools, temples, and government officers in remote villages and suburbs of Galle, Matara, Nuwara Eliya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dehiattakandiya, Ampara, Mahiyanganaya, Badulla, and Walapane ect.
  • As a result of the meditation programs and dhamma discussions held for several thousand devotees in Mahaweli B and C sector for many years, The Methsisila Buddhist Organization was first established in Dehiattakandiya Area.
  • The Methsisila Buddhist Organization purchased a three and half (3½) acre land in Kajuwatta area and it was offered to the maha sangha to practice original Theravada Buddhist meditation and teach dhamma to the devotees across the world.
  • From 2007.06.10, This place came to be known as Ariyadhamma Monastery and Meditation center.

The first Arrival to the Monastery

  • Two monks observed VAS in rainy season at a very small cottage in the monastery and venerable Badalkubure Anuruddha thero and resident monks who arrived to the rainy retreat ceremony for the very first time, planted a branch of sacred Bodhi tree and officially placed the first brick in the area where the monks resident to be.
  • The most venerable Nauyane Ariyadhamma thero and 5 resident monks attended the rainy retreat ceremony in 2007 and another five cottages (kuti) and a dining hall was offered to the maha sangha in the ceremony.
  • During the first 3 years, all Buddhist activities such as Meditation programs and Dhamma discussion were held with limited facilities.
  • By 2011, with the cooperation of Meth Sisila Buddhist organization and Sadaham Charika Buddhist Organization with the support of Buddhist and non-Buddhists devotees, we were able to arrange following facilities for the convenience of both monks and devotees.
    • 4000 square feet meditation hall
    • A shrine room
    • 28 Buddha statues and shelters
    • 20 cottages (kuti) for Monks
    • A kitchen
    • A hall where monks come to alms round(Pindapatha Hall)
    • Washrooms
    • Electricity
